“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.” – Gianni Versace
I’m sharing a few of my favorite tips I live by and share with clients at work. I’ve been styling people for over 10 years and cannot stress the importance of the first one. I probably could write a novel about it because I can be so discouraged on how many woman hate their bodies. I’ve been there, and have to remind myself…
SIZE IS JUST A NUMBER
Never, and I mean never let a pair of jeans make you feel bad about yourself. I don’t care if yesterday you were a size 4 and today the size 6 barely fits. I don’t care if you’ve gained 10 lbs and you can’t imagine putting on a size 10 because you’ve been an 8 for years. And you shouldn’t care either.
If you go through life fixating on a number you’ll never feel satisfied. The only thing that matters is how do these jeans look and feel when you look in the mirror? If they fit, make your butt look good, and you like them then why should it matter what size they are?
I can’t stress this enough… size is just a number. I have women in the fitting room who are beautiful but critiquing every part of their body and won’t dare touch a larger size because how could they live with themselves if they gained weight? We live in a society where the larger the size it some how associates with ugliness. THAT’S NOT THE CASE!
There is no mold of what size, weight, height you should be. We are all unique and that’s how it’s suppose to be. Why would you want to look like anyone else?
Not too mention, every brand runs differently. I can range from L-XXL extremely easily, but sometimes I still find a Medium that fits. Unfortunately, if someone is judging you it’s because they have insecurities about how they look.
“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” – Coco Chanel
ALWAYS UPDATE YOUR BASICS
I know it’s hard to get rid of your favorite little black dress. But when that LBD is no longer black and it’s a shade of blue… it’s time to donate it! Or when your go-to t-shirt has a few small holes in it and you keep wearing it… well it’s time to replace it!
Did you know you should be replacing your bra and underwear every six months? Also, really think about how often you wash your bra… yes, be honest with yourself. It’s probably not all that often. If that’s the case just invest in 4-6 bra’s so you can easily transition everyday between different one’s and give the a nice cleaning every week!
“What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.” – Miuccia Prada
WEAR WHAT FITS VS. WHAT’S ON TREND
Just because somethings on trend it doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy it! Sometimes certain trends don’t fit your body style, and that’s okay! For example, I love this whole oversized jacket trend inspired by Balenciaga. Yet yesterday, I tried on this fabulous Ikea blue coat that was a total knock off of Balenciaga’s coat and I felt like a linebacker in the NFL. Oh well.
Sometimes it works out. This season the top colors are: Shades of Yellow and Orange, Lavender, Neutrals, and Pink. Well aren’t I lucky… almost all those colors (except yellow) work great on me!
“Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.” – Oscar de la Renta
Life is short and sometimes you just need to treat yourself. I’m not saying go out and buy a $5000 Gucci jacket, but everyone treating themselves will be different. For some it’s buying a $1000 Saint Laurent Cross Body, other’s it’s a $310 Gucci Slide, other’s it’s a $100 bottle of perfume, and sometimes it’s just buying anything for yourself because you’re supporting your family and kids so it’s just a new cotton shirt.
Whatever it is, sometimes you just have to take care of yourself and get something you like. It will be something you cherish and wear on special occasions.
“Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them.” – Marc Jacobs
Lastly, have confidence. Whatever you’re wearing, ROCK IT! No matter what you have on if you’re confident it will draw people in! Just remember you’re beautiful. Life is too short to stress about the small stuff.
